Lebanon Cafe is located on a lively block of Carrollton Ave just upriver of Uptown. They offer Mediterranean food at affordable prices and a welcoming atmosphere. I was here on a Tuesday night around 8:30 and there was a smattering of people, though I'm sure on a Friday or Saturday evening this place really gets busy. They have a large menu and offer all the Mediterranean classics that you would find on a menu in Istanbul. This is more of a business casual crowd though anyone would feel comfortable here.

I got the cumber and yogurt salad and my date got the spinach salad. The spinach salad was very large for the price and was very tasty. The cucumber salad came in a small bowl but the presentation was deceptive; it was filling and fueled me longer than I expected. Also, we brought our own bottle of wine, which is a really great aspect of this place. There was no corking fee and they provided glasses for us at no charge. Another perk of this restaurant is that Mediterranean food is inherently filled with many vegetarian options. The $5 falafel is always a safe choice for veggies and I can personally recommend the spinach filo as well as the stuffed grape leaves. Both were appetizers and helped round out the meal.

My only complaint about this place isn't really legitimate but it comes down to personal preference. While the atmosphere is lively, the restaurant itself is a too spacious. I like to be close to other tables and a little bit cramped. It's a good place for a first date but it's not as intimate as I would have liked; it's definitely got the feel of a restaurant as opposed to an eatery.

All in all, I liked Lebanon Cafe. It made me feel like I was back in the Middle East, but surrounded by well put together New Orleans folks. Their food was hearty and affordable. Most places I have gotten a falafel in the past have been hole-in-the-wall take out joints but this is a veritable restaurant. As I said above, it's not intimate, so don't go looking for low-lighting and low ceilings but what it lacked in romantic atmosphere it made up for in food quality, the fact that you can BYOB, and being on a nice street with a good crowd.

Oh! Can't forget to mention that just a block away the St. Charles streetcar line terminates. If you like taking photos bring your camera out here and wander up to the streetcar parking garage. If you're a public transit enthusiast like myself, this is a great place to get an up-close look at the classic New Orleans rolling stock.
