Satsuma Cafe is in the Bywater and, much like the neighborhood, attracts a wide range of folks. The young, hip/punk crowd of New Orleans may seem like the dominant group here but if you sit in the high-ceilinged cafe long enough you'll see that the crowd varies. You won't find many Uptown-type people at Satsuma but you do see a business meeting between creatives on occasion, as well as many students working towards their degrees.

I haven't eaten much of the food but just sitting inside and smelling all the goodness that's being cooked is a testimonial in itself. They offer all kinds of sandwich combinations, many vegetarian-friendly, and lunch is served all day.

There are all the regular coffee and tea drinks available plus a few interesting twists. I had a sip of The Cleanser, a very fine mixture of beet juice, celery, and cucumber, and it lived up to its name. My eyes seemed to widen and I felt instantly revitalized.

My favorite thing about Satsuma is the atmosphere. While the food's good and the drinks are tasty and affordable, the decor is eclectic and comforting. The walls feature paintings by local artists who often stop in for a coffee and there are all kinds of tables for different sized groups. It's by no means a "coffee library", like many coffee shops around the country have turned into, so you can go and talk and not feel intrusive but you can also go there to read and be studious.

Satsuma really embodies the neighborhood it's in. The Bywater is where many emerging artists live but it's not solely an art enclave; all kinds of people populate the area and a fair cross-section come out to Satsuma for their coffee and unique fare. It's a neighborhood place but hardly exclusive. The baristas are friendly and other patrons seem to be willing to engage you in a conversation. With such a good vibe and warmth emanating from the interior design, Satsuma is a great place to experience one of New Orleans best neighborhoods while enjoying good coffee and delicious food.

  • Bohemian-style cafe with a wide range of foods, from pancakes to vegetarian soup. High ceilings and a welcoming atmosphere, Satsuma makes a mean cup of coffee and their large (which is really large!) is only $2
