I've been avoiding the House of Blues. Knowing that it's a franchise and in most other major cities in the United States is a point against it in a city like New Orleans where you can see and hear great music every night of the week in all kinds of clubs, usually for free. Sometimes though, someone is just too popular of a band to be playing those back alley clubs and the only venue that will fit them is the House of Blues. This was the case last night with Dr. John. A New Orleans music institution, he drew a huge crowd, probably around 1000 people, and only the House of Blues was a suitable venue. As a venue it's spacious and decorated with all kinds of blues paraphernalia. There's a two bars in the main hall, and another outside in a type of patio area. The drinks are a little steep in price and not particularly strong, which should be expected since you're at a tourist mecca. The acoustics are great and the lighting is just right. You can tell that since it's a franchise they've got all the decorating down to a science, which definitely kills any authenticity you can imagine. Overall, I liked the venue as a superficial place to see music. I wouldn't go here unless someone I absolutely was dying to see was playing because as I said before, New Orleans is filled with so many other great places it's just silly to waste your time on expensive drinks and corporate settings unless there is good reason.
