I want to really like the Maple Leaf Bar. It's on a really great block in Riverbend, it's got an intimate feel yet it's busy and lively, they have some of the best music in town almost every night of the week, and its music space is just the right size for seeing a (semi-)formal show. Unfortunately, it's also crazy expensive (for a town where free is the currency) and pretty "fratty" (ie. filled with frat guys). In a city that is built on the authenticity of experience, Maple Leaf doesn't hold a candle to so many other places. Sure, it's a New Orleans staple but seeing Rebirth Brass Band in a crowd of stodgy, upper-middle class folks just doesn't feel right. Also, the prices for drinks and admission are too much for a city where you can see free music and get cheap drinks any night of the week. $3.50 for a Miller High Life is outrageous and a $12 cover to see Rebirth is asking a lot. Maybe I'm just used to downtown bars and venues, and maybe I'm not rich enough to be hanging out that far upriver, but regardless, the place prices me out. Aside from these (legitimate) complaints, the atmosphere of the Maple Leaf is becoming and when Rebirth does come on, you tend to forget about how much you paid to get in. Tuesday night is their residency and they really put on a great show. If you haven't seen a New Orleans brass band before, this is the place to check out the finest. All in all, I can't say I had a bad time at the Maple Leaf but all the negative factors put together make it unlikely that I'll go there again, even if Rebirth is playing. The fact is is that you find Rebirth and other brass bands all over town if you look in the right spots; there's just no need to pay so much for a marginally good bar with expensive drinks.
