Michelle Obama says new bangs are her 'midlife crisis'
Posted February 18, 2013
You're the first lady of the United States, you turn 49, your midlife crisis looms. Whaddya gonna do? Sports car? Out. Bungee jumping? Definitely out. New bangs? Check.
That's the explanation first lady Michelle Obama joked about with Rachael Ray today in an "Q & Ray" interview via Skype for the Rachael Ray Show airing Wednesday.
What inspired you? Ray asked about the much-commented-on bob hairstyle Mrs. O got last month. It was just before the inauguration and around her 49th birthday and features youthful-looking fringe.
"This is my midlife crisis: the bangs," Obama said. "I couldn't get a sports car. They won't let me bungee-jump. So instead, I cut my bangs."
She was joshing, of course, but not entirely, because even a popular first lady can hardly do anything while she's in office without upsetting someone or making things difficult for her husband's administration. Except maybe change her hairstyle.
Ray and Obama also dished about their favorites among the Oscar nominees (the Academy Awards are Sunday night): Obama said she loved Lincoln, Argo and Beasts of the Southern Wild, which she enthusiastically endorsed last week when she hosted some cast and crew, including young best-actress nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, at the White House.
"This has been a great year in movies, so I don't think we can have a loser," Obama said.
